History
Marmaris has a history dating back thousands of years and was known in ancient times as Physkos, meaning “Nature City” in the Carian language. Archaeological traces suggest settlement in the region dates back to around 3400 BC.
The city developed as an important harbor settlement of ancient Caria before coming under the influence of the Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines and the Menteşe Beylik. Marmaris later became part of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1522.
