Located in Orhaniye within the Hisarönü Gulf of Marmaris, Kızkumu Beach is a rare natural phenomenon where a shallow sand path stretches across the sea. With its unique geological structure, legendary story and calm atmosphere, it is one of the most visited and iconic destinations in the region.
History
Kızkumu Beach is approximately 400–600 meters long and forms a narrow sand path extending from the shore into the sea. This natural formation divides the bay into two parts and creates the illusion of walking on water. The surrounding area is covered with pine forests and calm waters, making it one of the most peaceful coastal landscapes in Marmaris. The shallow and wave-free sea makes it suitable for all types of visitors. The Kızkumu area is historically significant due to its proximity to the ancient city of Bybassos, dating back to the 7th–6th centuries BC. Archaeological remains such as walls, harbor structures, temples, and settlement traces can still be found in the surrounding area. The region has hosted civilizations since ancient times and continues to be an important cultural and historical site within the Marmaris peninsula.
Why Visit
According to a local legend, a king’s daughter fell in love with a poor fisherman. Forbidden by her father, she tried to reach her lover by walking into the sea with sand in her skirt. As she stepped forward, the sand turned into a path across the water. However, before reaching her lover, she was struck by an arrow, and the sand turned red. How to Get There
Kızkumu Beach is located approximately 30–35 km from Marmaris and can be reached by car or minibus via Orhaniye. Boat tours from Marmaris or nearby marinas are also a popular option. The beach offers basic facilities such as restaurants, cafes, sunbeds and parking areas. While entry to the beach is free, some services are provided by local businesses for a fee. Kızkumu is a protected natural area. Visitors are advised to respect the environment and avoid disturbing the natural sand formation.
