History
Sedir Island, known in antiquity as Kedrai (or Cedrae), was one of the important cities of the Carian civilization. The island is part of a group of three islands in the eastern part of the Gulf of Gökova and has been inhabited for centuries due to its strategic location. Historical sources suggest that the region was once covered with cedar trees, which is believed to be the origin of the name Cedrae. Over time, the island became part of the Rhodian Peraea and played an important role as a coastal settlement. The main settlement was located on the eastern side of the island, where the city developed within fortified walls. The remains of the theatre, temples, residential areas and harbor structures reflect a well-organized ancient city. Most of the visible ruins today date back to the Byzantine period, although the origins of the settlement go much further back. The island eventually came under Ottoman rule in the 15th century.
Why Visit
Sedir Island is best known for Cleopatra Beach, famous for its unique golden sand. According to legend, this sand was specially brought from Egypt for Cleopatra. The sand is composed of rare limestone particles and is strictly protected today. How to Get There
Sedir Island is most easily accessed by boat from Çamlı village near Marmaris. Daily tours also depart from Akyaka, making it a popular day-trip destination.
